Same Shape, different Plastics: Acoustic AI Success where visual Classification fails
Many common single-use plastic items are visually indistinguishable - to you and to the sensors used to separate plastics for recycling. But Acoustic AI can help!
Reclamation Factory Joins the 14th NextCycle Michigan Recycling Technologies Accelerator Cohort
Reclamation Factory is excited to announce that we have been selected to participate in the NextCycle Michigan accelerator program on the Recycling Technologies track, designed to help improve sustainable materials management in the state. Reclamation Factory will pursue opportunities for plastic recycling in Michigan to contribute to the development of Michigan’s recycling infrastructure. As a part of the program, Reclamation Factory will receive assistance in fundraising and product development with the goal of applying our Acoustic AI technology to bring the state towards its 45% waste diversion goal by 2030 and build a robust circular economy.
Case Study 2: Reclaiming the “unsortable”
How can Acoustic AI can be used to reclaim the 62 million tons of black e-waste we throw away every year.
Case Study 1: Exceeding Bale-Spec for Municipal Waste Sorting
Reclamation Factory’s Acoustic AI technology can achieve over 98% sorting precision on a typical municipal waste stream.
Sorting By Sound: New Pathways For Material Recovery
The plastic sorting problem in recycling cannot be avoided. Recyclers rely on material buyers, and buyers require consistent, uncontaminated feedstock. The question of who sorts through all the trash (and at what cost) gets passed between these groups and bottlenecks recovery for millions of tons of material every month.
Introducing Acoustic AI - A Revolutionary Technology for Plastic Classification
Reclamation Factory’s new Acoustic AI technology can identify a broad range of plastic types regardless of shape, color, or size.
Reclamation Factory Completes PGH Lab 10.0 Pilot: Advancing Plastic Recycling in Pittsburgh
Reclamation Factory partnered with the City of Pittsburgh through PGH Lab 10.0 to pilot a plastic waste identification and tracing platform. Discover how machine learning, big data, and local partnerships are shaping the future of plastics recycling.
Turning the Plastic Problem into a Machine Learning Challenge
Every year, more than 350 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide — and most of it doesn’t get recycled. One of the biggest hurdles? Sorting. Different plastics have different properties, and to recycle them effectively, they need to be separated by resin type, shape, and color.
At Reclamation Factory, we asked a simple question:
Could we teach a machine to see what a human sorter sees — and do it faster, more accurately, and at scale?
Tech for Trash: Data-Driven Solutions for Plastic Recycling
Tanisha shares her experience building, analyzing, and managing big datasets as an intern with Reclamation Factory, and how she uses that data to build tools for sorting plastic waste into traceable recycling streams.
Companies make promises about recycling. Do they keep them?
Recycling only works when people trust the system. Traceability and certifications turn good intentions into credible action.
Reclamation Factory Featured by Pittsburgh Robotics Network
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been featured by the Pittsburgh Robotics Network in their latest video spotlight! The feature highlights our work and contributions to Pittsburgh’s thriving robotics ecosystem.
Being recognized by such an influential organization is an honor, and it reinforces our commitment to advancing robotics technology right here in Pittsburgh.
A Smarter Future for Plastic Waste
It’s no secret that plastic waste is a massive problem in the United States. Each year, we generate over 40 million tons of plastic waste—yet, according to a 2022 Greenpeace report, less than 6% of it is ever recycled into something new. Meanwhile, the demand for post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic is skyrocketing, with forecasts predicting it will double by 2032. If the demand exists, why aren’t we recycling more?
